 Rippon unapologetically embraces his role as the first openly gay Olympic athlete, offering hope and empowerment to LGBT people in this period of social conservatism. 

 

There are programs out there to help, but when it comes to a colonoscopy, you need a friend.

 

Going public is scary, but I want to encourage people to open and get the help they need.

 

This ruling, by not stating definitively that anti-gay discrimination is intolerable, has again stigmatized LGBTQ people as second-class citizens.
